This is the Legendary Co-Founder of H-Street Mike Ternasky Special Edition Commemorative Skateboarding Hall of Fame deck. Story by Tony Mag.
“I first met Mike Ternasky at Bobby G’s Skate Camp in Visalia in 1986. It was the first skate camp in America and after a squabble about skating on the sidewalk, we got along famously. MT was this young, super smart and intellectual dude that was sharp, energetic, motivated and confident. He was raised in Northern California around the same time that Apple Computers and things like that were being invented. As a university student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, he was also quite the futuristic tech nerd.
I told him about my ideas for how a skateboard company should be run by skaters and not dudes in suits. My vision was pretty scattered as I just didn’t have the practical and business knowledge how to make it all happen. MT did, so the conspiracy got under way during my week at skate camp.
Together, we went on this journey of putting together a skate company from scratch and with a whole different point of view. It was also in the 80’s when skateboarding was just getting into its second real upswing, opportunities were endless, it seemed, and Mike and I were able to take crazy ideas and just make them go.
There was a whole new generation of kids that were skating everything, besides the few parks that remained and the homebuilt ramps. Street skating was born, and we were all about it.
The vision Mike had for making skate videos with home video cameras was so crazy when he first told me about this project and video that he wanted to call “Shackle Me Not”. I had no idea what that even meant and MT was happy to explain. The result exceeded my wildest imagination then and certainly now. The follow up was “Hokus Pokus” and it managed to top the first one.
A huge key to the video’s success was the music that Mike was able to put together from upcoming garage bands like The Cry, Kirk and the Jerks, Ron Allen and so many more. But the biggest part was the explosive street skating by Matt Hensley, Ron Allen, Sal Barbier and of course, vert and mini ramp antics by Danny Way and so many talented skaters that are part of the permanent H-Street legacy.
The video’s that Mike made with the Plan B team were also some of the most coveted and legendary skate videos of all time! His vision on exactly what a skate video was, pulled it away from some wannabe Hollywood production to a total skater DYI creation in a format that arguably has lasted since then and well into the social media digital age.
While Mike’s life ended in a tragic car accident in 1994, his presence, inspiration and legacy has never left this world and will most certainly stand forever! Danny Way and Colin McKay run Plan B, Mike’s second venture in skateboarding that is easily as legendary as his first. We all still talk about him and this year, he was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame as an Icon of the Skate Industry.
This became a moment and opportunity for us to create a memorial graphic for our long-lost brother-in-arms as a celebration and appreciation. It was drawn by Tim Baron with a little help and input from me and we even had some help from Mike’s daughter, Michaela Ternasky.”
The Special Edition deck is made on an old school shape that is 32.8 X 9.25, with a 7.7 Nose, 7 Tail and 13.9 Wheelbase. It comes in a Limited A Series Edition that is numbered.
We are also making this available on a few standard street shapes, these will not be numbered.
